What is a flexible busbar?

A flexible busbar is an electrical conductor designed to accommodate movement between connection points. In a laminated flexible busbar, multiple thin copper strips form a conductor that bends more readily than a solid copper bar of comparable overall dimensions.

A rigid busbar maintains its manufactured shape, while a flexible connection can accommodate limited movement caused by vibration, temperature changes or small differences in component positioning. The required flexibility depends on the thickness and number of laminations, the shape of the connection and the available flexible length.

Frequently asked questions about flexible busbars

What is a flexible busbar made of?

AA-Tuotanto’s flexible busbars are made from thin copper laminations stacked together. The individual laminations are 0.5 mm or 1 mm thick.

Where are flexible busbars used?

Flexible busbars are used in applications such as battery energy storage systems, renewable energy systems, EV charging infrastructure and industrial power distribution, where connections need to accommodate vibration, thermal expansion or small installation tolerances.

Can you manufacture flexible busbars to my drawing?

Yes. AA-Tuotanto manufactures custom flexible copper busbars according to customer drawings and technical specifications in Vaasa, Finland, and delivers to customers in the Nordic countries and worldwide. Send us your drawing, required quantity and preferred delivery date so we can review the requirements.

What is the difference between a flexible and a rigid busbar?

A flexible busbar uses stacked thin laminations to accommodate limited movement between connection points. A rigid busbar maintains a fixed shape. The choice depends on whether the connection needs to allow for vibration, thermal expansion or installation tolerances.
